Naginata Parts

Research, Art Direction, Design and Animation

This series of five videos offers an in-depth exploration of the components of the Naginata in modern sport.
Through carefully crafted animations, detailed research, and curated archival footage, each video explains the function of individual elements
of the weapon and their practical application in combat.

One of the main challenges in creating this series was finding a way to present the elements of the modern naginata in a way that felt both precise and engaging. While the modern naginata differs from its traditional predecessor in dimensions, materials, and specifications, the principles behind how each component functions in combat remain largely the same.

My goal was to balance technical accuracy with dynamic storytelling—analyzing each part’s physical properties while also bringing to life its role
in offense, defense, and combat strategy. By doing so, I aimed to help viewers intuitively connect the weapon’s design to its real-world application
in modern practice.

Below, you’ll find a selection of animated GIFs highlighting key moments from the series. These visuals capture both the detailed breakdown of the naginata’s components and the dynamic movement showcased throughout the project—offering a glimpse into the visual storytelling and energy behind the animations.

Another important aspect of this project was making the content approachable for a broader audience. I wanted to blend technical depth with compelling visual storytelling so these videos would resonate not only with experienced practitioners but also with those unfamiliar with naginata
or martial arts altogether, sparking curiosity and inspiring new practitioners to explore this art.

Striking the right balance between technical depth and accessibility was key—ensuring the information was clear and engaging without losing
the nuance and complexity that make the art form so fascinating.

This project was both a rewarding and enjoyable experience, combining research, animation, and creative direction into a series that I’m proud
to share. Seeing it published on naginata social media and engaging with a wider community made the process even more meaningful.
It’s been a pleasure to contribute to promoting modern naginata through storytelling and design, and to help make this martial art more accessible and inspiring to others.
